Sedation

Dental phobia is a real, often overwhelming reality for millions of people. Negative previous dental experiences, fear of needles or drills, and severe gag refluxes are just some of the reasons people feel extreme anxiety when thinking about visiting the dentist.

If you suffer from dental phobia – fear no more!  We are committed to understanding the very real nature of your fears. Not only will Dr. Young and his staff treat you with delicacy and care, but our expertise in sedation and anesthesia will allow you to experience dental care in a whole new way.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide, often called “laughing gas”, is inhaled through the nose and produces a mild level of relaxation.  It is also a mild pain reliever, and patients tend to feel the appointment goes by faster, as well.  This level of sedation works well for patients with only a mild anxiety about their visit.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation utilizes pills you swallow just like a Tylenol tablet.  They produce a more profound level of relaxation, and provide a degree of amnesia (memory loss) about the dental procedure.  We typically combine the oral sedatives with nitrous oxide.  This level of sedation is appropriate for patients with a moderate level of dental phobia or anxiety.

Intravenous Sedation (“Twilight Sleep”)

Intravenous Sedation produces a sleep-like state referred to as “twilight sleep”.  IV Sedation differs from general anesthesia in that the patient maintains their protective cough reflexes, making it a safe, predictable anesthesia option for the dental office.  A strong amnesic (memory loss) effect is common.  Most patients do not remember their dental visit.  Dr. Young has received extensive training in IV Sedation administration, and is an examiner for the Dental Board of California anesthesia certification program.
